With the warm summer just around the corner, there are plenty of jobs to be done in the garden to prepare and maintain your lawn for the warmer months ahead.

To do this you will need gardening tools that are well serviced and can get the job done time and time again. One of the tools you will use this summer is a brush cutter.

A brush cutter is the perfect tool for unwanted long grasses, which can often be the difference between a looked after lawn, and a luxury, highly sought after garden.

That’s why maintaining your brush cutter is so important in order to keep achieving fantastic results time and time again.

To ensure maximum results, the machine needs to be serviced thoroughly and regularly. At Sunshine Coast Mowers, we offer maintenance and service treatments of all garden equipment sold in store.

But there are a few things you can do to ensure your brush cutter is ready for the task ahead…

Check Throttle

Before using your brush cutter it is important to make checks and test if the throttle trigger lock and the throttle function correctly, and whether or not the guard has any cracks or damages. If there are any damages then you must replace or fix these before using or the machine will not be safe to use. This also applies to checking the trimmer head to be certain of no cracks or damages.

A Quick Clean After Use

After every use of your machine it is encouraged to clean the outside of it and make sure that the harness is not damaged to keep you safe. You should also clean the air filter and replace it if necessary so that you won’t forget next time you want to use it.

Check All Parts

Roughly once a week (if you use your brush cutter quite regularly) it is important to clean the harder parts of your brush cutter, such as the cooling fins, the outside carburetor area, and the outside of the spark plug. It is also encouraged to check that the air intake into the starter unit isn’t blocked and that the angle gear is three quarters full of grease.

When to Seek Professional Help

Jobs like cleaning the fuel tank, fuel filter, fan, carburetor and fuel pipe are all tasks that should be performed monthly, especially during heavy use seasons such as spring and summer. At Sunshine Coast Mowers our team of professionals can look over your machine and help maintain its longevity.

If you know you won’t be using your brush cutter for a while and plan on storing it, there are a few things you must do first, to guarantee that it will still be in good condition next time you want to use it.

Draining the tank

Before putting your machine into storage, clean it thoroughly and then drain the tank completely. To empty the carburetor, let the machine idle until the engine stops. Check the machine for any dirt and also allow it to dry completely.

Checking the spark plug

Remove and examine the spark plug. If they need cleaning or replacing it is a good idea to do so before you store the machine. If the spark plug electrodes are a light reddish brown, then it's all right. If not, the spark plugs may need to be cleaned or replaced, which can be done at Sunshine Coast Mowers.

Checking the metal cutting blade

The next job is to remove and clean the metal cutting blade, check for damages, and protect it from any signs of corrosion.

Remove the metal cutting blade and clean it. If necessary you can take your metal cutting blades to Sunshine Coast Mowers for sharpening.

Storing mowing lines wet

To keep a mowing line elastic, remove the spool from the mowing head and store it in a damp place. Two or three days before the start of the new season, place the line in water to keep it flexible and supple (this also applies to the PolyCut blade).

Space-saving storage

It is then a good idea to store your brush cutter hanging up. It saves plenty of space as you can fold the handlebars in so that it will easily hang in the garden shed.
